Never Do These Things with Contact Lenses!

Contact Lenses in Newmarket, OntarioContact lenses are a wonderful vision correction method that preserves your appearance and avoids those annoying fog-ups and other frustrations that wearing eye glasses have. However, since you are putting them directly on your eye, there are a few things you need to know to never, ever do with them.

  1. Never put your contact lenses in your mouth! It may seem tempting when they need cleaning and you don’t have any solution with you, but the bacteria in your mouth can give you a really nasty eye infection.
  2. Never handle your contact lenses without washing your hands first! Bacteria lives everywhere, and the last thing you need is some of those nastier ones in your eye, which is not equipped to handle it.
  3. Never reuse cleaning solution! That cleaning solution is great for disinfecting your contact lenses, but after it has been used, it can become overwhelmed with bacteria pretty quickly and be worse than useless for the second use. A bad infection called Pseudomonas aeruginosa could result from doing this. Use fresh solution each time and be sure to air-dry the case between uses.
  4. Never wear your contact lenses too long! Your eyes need rest and plenty of oxygen. Wearing contact lenses too long can lead to all sorts of problems, including infections and corneal abrasions. As for those ones that claim you can sleep in them, it’s probably better if you don’t. While a nap here and there, such as when you accidentally fall asleep in them, probably won’t hurt you, continually doing so is not a good idea.
  5. Never wear your contact lenses if they are irritating your eyes! Something could be wrong with the contact lenses, your eyes, or both. Try a new pair, and if those bother you also, make an appointment to see your eye care professional.

At Dr. Miller & Dr. Tilis Family Optometry, we offer exams for contact lenses and all the information you need in order to wear contact lenses safely. Your vision is too important to risk by doing the wrong things with your contact lenses.
