Retinal Imaging – Your Eyes Are a Window to More Than Your Soul
It has often been said that our eyes are a window to our soul and that we cannot hide what we are deep inside from those who can read it in our eyes. While this could be just fanciful thinking, what is completely true is that our eyes are a window to things that can be going on with our health. Retinal imaging is a modern high-resolution imaging system that takes pictures of the inside of your eyes. This allows an optometrist to gauge how healthy your eyes are and can also provide an indication of certain other health concerns.
As far as your eye health, retinal imaging is ideal for diagnosing such conditions as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, cancer of the retina and retinal detachment. Early detection of these conditions is critical to avoiding permanent and irreversible vision loss.
In addition to eye health, retinal imaging is also useful for finding other health problems, such as diabetes and hypertension. With diabetes, the disease can cause changes in the blood vessels of the retina, which shows up with retinal imaging. Hypertension (high blood pressure) often first presents itself in the eye before any other symptoms. With retinal imaging, certain indicators (including narrowed blood vessels, retinal spots and bleeding in the back part of your eye) alert you that you may have hypertension.
Retinal imaging is an important part of a routine eye exam, and if completed each year, it will provide a historical record of any changes in your eyes, so your optometrist can watch for even the least amount of change going on.
