Contact lenses are not a one-size-fits-all solution for vision correction. Even the most popular brands and types can prove useless for those people with certain eye conditions. For example, if you have had refractive surgery and find yourself needing corrective lenses, you may not get clear enough vision with traditional contact lenses. Other eye conditions such as dry eye, corneal scarring and keratoconus may also impair your ability to comfortably wear regular contact lenses. In these cases, you might be able to be helped through the use of specialty contact lenses.
• Rigid Gas Permeable – These specialty contact lenses offer more oxygen permeability and thus are healthier and more comfortable. They are a rigid lens, but not like the old hard lenses used many years ago. These lenses are completely customizable and can be used for a number of conditions.
• Scleral Lenses – These specialty contact lenses are far larger than typical contact lenses, as they are intended to rest on the sclera (the white of your eye). Because they are hyper oxygen permeable and hold saline solution on the cornea, they are a popular choice for those with diseased corneas. They are so comfortable that even those with no eye diseases are finding choosing scleral lenses. Since they can be ordered in any prescription, even as bifocals, you might find them to be a great option for you.
• Custom Soft Lenses – If you find yourself not getting the vision correction you need with standard contact lenses, you can go into the realm of custom soft lenses, which can be made to any power and size desired.
