Contact lenses have definitely come a long way since what Leonardo da Vinci envisioned in the early 1500s. They were first constructed out of glass in the late 1800s, and plastic contact lenses made their first appearance in the late 1930s. It wasn’t until the 1970s, however, that soft contact lenses were developed. New developments did not end at that point, however, as each year, we are seeing specialty contact lenses being developed that enable even more people to enjoy the benefits of wearing contact lenses.
For years, contact lenses could only be worn by those who needed correction for either nearsightedness or farsightedness, but not for both. We can now offer specialty contact lenses that are similar to bifocal eyeglasses, in that they improve sight for both reading and distance vision at the same time. With multifocal or bifocal specialty contact lenses, you can put away those reading glasses!
At Dr. Miller & Dr. Tilis Family Optometry, we offer our Newmarket, ON area patients great versatility when it comes to specialty contact lenses. We enjoy being able to offer contact lenses to people who may not have been able to wear them in the past. There are options if you have eye issues, such as astigmatism, dry eye syndrome, or corneal scarring. We offer soft lenses, astigmatism contacts, bifocal contacts, specialty contact lenses, rigid gas permeable lenses and other types.
Specialty contact lenses are not just for unique eye situations– they can also be fun. A very popular option for patients these days is coloured contact lenses that change the colour of your eyes. Perhaps you weren’t born with the eye colour you want, or you just want to try something new. These lenses are available with no vision correction if you just want the colour-changing ability, but do not need vision correction.
Give us a call if you would like to be assessed for wearing contact lenses, even if you’ve been told in the past that you couldn’t wear them. Times and technology are ever-changing, and we keep up on each new change, so we can offer you the very best in eye care.
